An asteroid twice as tall as the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt skimmed past the Earth on May 30th. According to NASA, the massive space rock, dubbed Asteroid 2011 HP, was first discovered on April 13, 2011 and it has been zipping past the Earth since at least 1904.

The asteroid is traveling at 18,857 miles per hour. If it were to strike the Earth near a major city during one of its passes, it could easily kill millions of people instantly and send massive amounts of dust into the atmosphere. 2011 HP is but one of many such Near Earth Objects which pose catastrophic threats against the people of Earth.

In 2013, a massive superbolide entered the Earth's atmosphere at 42,900 miles per hour and exploded in the air over Chelyabinsk, Russia with 26 to 33 times as much energy as that which was released by the atomic bomb that destroyed Hiroshima. The Chelyabinsk explosion blew out glass windows in cars and buildings. Had the meteor struck the ground, it would have killed everyone for miles. I own a small fragment of the meteor, one of my prized possessions.

These fireballs remind me of the prophecy in the biblical book of Revelation. John the Beloved, the apostle who stood at the cross of Jesus as He died, was later shown a sweeping vision of the events to coincide with the end of this epoch of mankind. He writes:

Revelation Chapter 8

And the angel took the censer, and filled it with fire of the altar, and cast it into the earth: and there were voices, and thunderings, and lightnings, and an earthquake.
And the seven angels which had the seven trumpets prepared themselves to sound.
7 The first angel sounded, and there followed hail and fire mingled with blood, and they were cast upon the earth: and the third part of trees was burnt up, and all green grass was burnt up.

And the second angel sounded, and as it were a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea: and the third part of the sea became blood;

And the third part of the creatures which were in the sea, and had life, died; and the third part of the ships were destroyed.

10 And the third angel sounded, and there fell a great star from heaven, burning as it were a lamp, and it fell upon the third part of the rivers, and upon the fountains of waters;

11 And the name of the star is called Wormwood: and the third part of the waters became wormwood; and many men died of the waters, because they were made bitter.

12 And the fourth angel sounded, and the third part of the sun was smitten, and the third part of the moon, and the third part of the stars; so as the third part of them was darkened, and the day shone not for a third part of it, and the night likewise.

What John appears to be seeing is catastrophic destruction on the Earth that results from the orbital passage of a "great star". People of John's era often referred to planets as "stars", so what John is likely seeing is the near Earth approach of a planet. This planet pushes space debris in front of itself. As some of this debris enters the atmosphere of the Earth, it appears as "hail and fire" falling upon the planet.

And, as postulated by Immanuel Velikovsky, the passing of another planet would fling bitumen into the atmosphere, which would appear to the eyes as fiery blood. This destruction will not only burn up much of the vegetation on our planet, but it will cause terrible atmospheric events such as loud "thunderings and lightnings" as well as massive seismic events.

Next, John sees a "great mountain burning with fire" that strikes the sea, wiping out a third of the sea life. Anyone who has seen an asteroid disaster movie, such as Deep Impact or Armageddon, can understand the description of such a space rock as similar to a mountain on fire.

Then comes the destroyer.

A "great star from heaven", or, a great planet, passes close enough that parts of it falls to the Earth as fire and turns much of the potable water on the planet bitter so that it cannot be consumed by man. Velikovsky describes this phenomenon in his excellent books, Earth in Upheaval and Worlds in Collision.

"The tails of comets are composed mainly of carbon and hydrogen gases. Lacking oxygen, they do not burn in flight, but the inflammable gases, passing through an atmosphere containing oxygen, will be set on fire."

"The descent of a sticky fluid which came earthward and blazed with heavy smoke is recalled in the oral and written traditions of the inhabitants of both hemispheres."

Velikovsky then goes on to quote from a dozen ancient records around the world, dated to approximately the same time period, that describe the same calamitous event. I'll share just two short excerpts. He writes:

"Popul-Vuh, the sacred book of the Mayas, narrates: 'It was ruin and destruction... the sea was piled up... it was a great inundation... people were drowned in a sticky substance raining from the sky. ... The face of the earth grew dark and the gloomy rain endured days and nights. ... And then there was a great din of fire above their heads.' The entire population was annihilated."

"The Manuscript Quiche' perpetuated the picture of the population of Mexico perishing in a downpour of bitumen: 'There descended from the sky a rain of bitumen and of a sticky substance. ... The earth was obscured and it rained day and night. And men ran hither and thither and were as if seized by madness; they tried to climb to the roofs, and the houses crashed down; they tried to climb the trees, and the trees cast them far away; and when they tried to escape in caves and caverns, these were suddenly closed.'"

What is chilling about these accounts is that not only does John the Revelator describe this great planet raining fire upon the Earth, but just as the ancient records of cultures around the world describe men trying to escape the destruction by hiding in caves, so too does the Bible predict that this will happen at the time of the passing of the great star.

In the Old Testament, the prophet Isaiah predicts in the 2nd chapter of his book:

10 "And they shall go into the holes of the rocks, and into the caves of the earth, for fear of the LORD, and for the glory of his majesty, when he ariseth to shake terribly the earth."

This same prophecy is repeated by John in Revelation chapter 6:

15 And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains;

16 And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb:

17 For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?

And, just as Velikovsky pointed out in the ancient records, in addition to the passing of a heavenly body, fiery hail and rain, great earthquakes and attempts by men to hid in caves, but the records also indicate that immediately following the cataclysms the Earth is plunged into a period of darkness.

This comports with John's description in chapter 8:

12 And the fourth angel sounded, and the third part of the sun was smitten, and the third part of the moon, and the third part of the stars; so as the third part of them was darkened, and the day shone not for a third part of it, and the night likewise.

We see in the prophecy that the Earth is engulfed in darkness for a period of time where the light of the sun, moon and stars are blocked out. Could this be due to the massive dust clouds that fill the atmosphere after meteor strikes pulverize the planet's surface?

It is interesting that John mentioned that it is the "kings" and "rich men" who first enter caves and others who try to hide in rocks and crevices. Certainly, there is ample evidence that past human civilizations have built massive underground labyrinths to escape some dreaded terror. But, I'm reminded of the grand underground city projects that our governments try to hide from the public. Why are they building such elaborate networks under the ground and concealing these projects from the general public?

The existence of these underground networks was confirmed, among other sources, by a truck driver in 2013. As the driver was about to enter an underground tunnel system, a citizen investigator asked him how far the tunnels go. This particular driver confirmed that he has driven goods through the tunnels as far as from the Ozarks to the state of Maine - a distance of nearly 1,500 miles. You can listen to the exchange below:

Are these underground cities and tunnels just for the potential of a nuclear war? Or does parts of the government have information that leads them to believe that the cyclical, cosmic cataclysms of the past are going to be repeated soon?

Certainly, ancient records from past civilizations indicate that there is a large, red planet with a long, elliptical orbit that passes through the inner solar system. The ancient Sumerian cuneiform records mention this planet, named Nibiru. In the MUL.APIN, which is a Babylonian compendium of astronomy dating back more than 3,000 years, this description of Niburi is offered:

Mul.Apin I.i:36- 38

“When the stars of Enlil have been finished, one big star – although its light is dim – divides the sky in half and stands there: that is, the star of Marduk, Nibiru, Jupiter; it keeps changing its position and crosses the sky.”

And, in the 4,000 year old Sumerian tablets, Enuma Elish, Tablet VII, line 126, 130-131, we read:

“Nibiru is his [Marduk’s] star, which he made appear in the heavens . . . The stars of heaven, let Nibiru set their course; let him shepherd all the gods like sheep.”

The stories of Nibiru, the great star-planet that sets the courses of the other planets, date back approximately 6,500 years. Velikovsky argues that sufficient evidence exists to suggest that these ancient stories of planetary chaos - wars between the gods in the skies - are the basis for many of the ancient Greek, Roman, Norse, eastern Indian, Mayan and other mythic tales. According to Velikovsky, these ancient stories indicate that something very large passed through our solar system, impacting the orbits of the planets within our inner solar system - even bringing about the present orbits of Venus and Mars.

I've read Velikovsky's works. They are highly credible and thoroughly researched. Velikovsky's personal friend, Albert Einstein, was in the process of helping Velikovsky edit a manuscript when Einstein passed away. A copy of Velikovsky's manuscript was found open on Einstein's desk. Students of biblical eschatology would find Velikovsky's secular works a helpful addition to their research libraries.

Are the biblical prophecies of future global catastrophes the fulfillment of these repeating cosmic cycles from the past? Jesus himself certainly warned His disciples of a future global destruction in the Last Days. When asked for what signs to look for that would indicate the "end of the world", Jesus replied that He would return only after horrifying cataclysms rock the world.

Matthew 24

21 For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.

22 And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved:

29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:

30 And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.

These are grim words that may fill some with fear. However, Jesus promised that He would return to the Earth to prevent the total annihilation of the planet and all the world will know that He is their only salvation.

How much better off we will be if we can but learn this truth BEFORE that great and dreadful day of the Lord.
