Kamila Shamsie Stands Up for Palestinian Rights
November 25, 2019 - Jake Morphonios
British Pakistani novelist, Kamila Shamsie, appeared on Channel 4 News to discuss the cultural boycott of Israel due to its brutal repression of Palestinians.
Shamsie has been awarded numerous prizes for literature, including the Nelly Sachs Preis award. The award is presented every two years by the German city of Dortmund and is named after the Jewish poet Nelly Sachs.
However, Zionists protested the Nelly Sachs Preis being given to Shamsie. So, Dortmund gave Shamsie an ultimatum: denounce the BDS movement for Palestinian rights, or her award would be taken away.
Shamsie refused to abandon her principles and Germany rescinded the award. Not only did Shamsie understand that she would be publicly shamed, but she also willingly gave up the $16,500 prize that goes with the award. The world needs more people of conscience like Kamila Shamsie.
